Rihanna’s Super Bowl Halftime Show: Why She Won’t Be Paid

The startling truth is that Super Bowl halftime shows don’t pay their performers. According to league rules, the NFL pays for all expenses associated with producing the halftime show, but the performers don’t receive compensation (although the NFL foots the bill for their travel expenses).

Yes, it is true that the live performance by Mary J. Blige, Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Kendrick Lamar, and Eminem that tens of millions of people saw last year went unpaid. Performers didn’t necessarily leave the game empty-handed, though. The exposure that they received from performing tends to re-ignite their careers.

After years away from the stage, Rihanna, who already has close to 250 million followers on social media, will use her appearance at the Super Bowl to reconnect with her audience and go back to her musical origins. As the NFL’s Live Music Entertainment Strategists, Jay-Z’s Roc Nation entered into a long-term agreement with the NFL in 2019. This collaboration with Jay-Z is another benefit for her. We are excited to see which guest stars, if any, Rihanna will bring onto the Superbowl 2023 stage with her.
